If you answered yes to those questions you might be surprised to learn that you have much in common with Quakers and The Religious Society of Friends. Simplicity, truth, equality, peace, justice and sustainability are the testimonies we aspire to follow in the way we live our lives.

You may be thinking: “But I’m not religious, I don’t believe in God!”

For Quakers, faith is about the whole of life. We seek, in our own lives and with others, to build a fairer, more truthful and more peaceful world. Our understanding of God is shaped by personal experience; different people use words that they find helpful and meaningful. As a result not all Quakers believe in God, but our personal experience means we share the testimonies as a way of living our lives and in that common ground and respect for each other, a community is formed. We most commonly use the phrases 'the Inner Light' and 'that of God in everyone' when referring to a person’s conscience. George Fox, the founder of Quakerism, writes in his journal: "Do rightly, justly...[and] equally to all people in all things, and that is according to that of God in every man, and the witness of God and the wisdom of God, and the life of God in your selves" ie directing us to our conscience, and the promptings of love and truth in our hearts.
